After graduating from high school, she spent a year working as a volunteer nurse at the Bremen Friedehorst Neurological Rehabilitation Center in Bremen-Lesum, Germany, through the Federal Volunteer Service [BFD]. "I didn't just want to sit on the couch. I had been thinking about medicine for a long time, but it was only the volunteer year that really encouraged me to do it. I was assigned to care in a ward for children and young people. The rehabilitation area is different than working in the hospital because the patients are with us longer.
