Nerius has since acted as a mentor for Petersen. "I had to take a picture with her [as a child] because I've always been a fan of hers and was enthusiastic about javelin throwing in general. Seeing how she hurled the javelin was and is incredible. I am very grateful to her for always making herself available. She gives me insider tips and supports me intellectually too - that is very valuable to me. Steffi is like a mentor to me because she was so successful and I looked up to her as a child."
