Biography
Started: She took up the sport in December 2019. (World Taekwondo YouTube channel, 11 May 2021) Reason: She previously played netball and moved to Wales in 2019 to train as a javelin thrower, before being talent-spotted by Disability Sport Wales at a multi-sport test event in Anglesey, Wales. "I didn't know there was a Para taekwondo team. But this has fallen into place perfectly and I am riding the wave to see where it goes. It was a no-brainer. If you get offered a bucket list option of potentially winning a Paralympic medal, you take it." (britishtaekwondo.org.uk, 12 May 2021; gbtaekwondo.co.uk, 29 Apr 2021) Ambition: To win a gold medal at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. (disabilitysportwales.com, 15 Jul 2022) Milestones: She became the first taekwondo athlete representing Great Britain to win a medal at the Paralympic Games when she claimed silver in the women's K44 -58kg category at the 2020 Games in Tokyo. The sport was making its Paralympic debut at Tokyo 2020. (SportsDeskOnline, 05 Dec 2023) Additional Info: NETBALL SKILLS She says her background as a netball player made the transition to taekwondo easier. "There are a lot of transferable skills from netball. Reaction times, footwork, speed and agility are all important in netball and in Para taekwondo. Even when it comes to blocking, the speed I can block certain kicks comes from my netball." (paralympics.org.uk, 26 May 2021) OTHER ACTIVITIES She has served as an athlete ambassador for Team GB and Paralympics GB's Path to Paris youth engagement programme. "We aim to win but we also aim to inspire. You think outside the box, and you adapt in life. And so, it's being that role model and showing them that anything's possible." (merseysportlive.co.uk, 25 Apr 2024) FURTHER EDUCATION She has studied for a master's degree in health psychology, natural sciences and psychology at Liverpool John Moores University in England.
