- Gilbert had a tumor on his spine when he was 6 years old. After jumping on a swing, his back began to hurt. A doctor said the impact had broken a blood vessel which cut off blood to his spinal cord. Gilbert began wheelchair basketball when he was 10 years old. He played throughout elementary, junior and high school. He was a five-time All-American at the University of Missouri
