- In July 2012, Staff Sergeant Sides was serving as an explosive ordinance disposal technician with the United States Marine Corps in Afghanistan. He was attempting to manually disarm an improvised explosive device when it exploded. His injuries resulted in the loss of vision in his left eye and the amputation of his lower right arm
