Biography
Jennifer Oakes has been a member of the women’s sitting volleyball team since 2015. She attended the 2019 Parapan Am Games (bronze), 2018 and 2022 (silver) world championship and the 2016 and 2020 Paralympics Games.
In February 2020, Oakes was named “Best Server” at the World ParaVolley final Paralympic qualification tournament in Halifax as Canada secured a spot for the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo by winning gold.
In July 2015, Oakes injured her right leg in a boating accident. Doctors were forced to amputate below the knee. Oakes was in the hospital for a little over a month recovering.
She was introduced to sitting volleyball by former national team member Shacarra Orr and Volleyball Canada’s Ian Halliday. By late summer 2016 she was headed to the Paralympic Games.
